One of my current tasks is the creation of an image resizing, cropping and optimising system. As part of this I need to have a set of sample images to determine the best settings for the optimisation. This post will cover some of the functionality I’ve taken advantage of in my search for the variety of images I require.
My first requirement is to find a number of images of different sizes. Thanks to a blog post by Michael Gharmis titled How to search with Google for specific image sizes (icons 32×32 or wallpapers 1280×1024), I found out how to limit my image searches to particular pixel dimensions. To summarise the Michael’s post, to limit a Google Image Search to specific dimensions, simply include the imagesize:<width>x<height> search parameter.
My second requirement is to find images of different file types. For this I found a post titled More awesome search tips from Google expert Daniel Russell, with real-world examples by John Tedesco. In this post John mentioned the filetype:<extension> search parameter.
Here are some example searches I can use to find my sample images:
- 450×450 pixel JPEG containing text
- imagesize:450x450 filetype:jpg text
- 600×600 pixel Bitmap containing a cartoon
- imagesize:600x600 filetype:bmp cartoon
